When intellectual pygmies rule?

Hi readers!

This blog is dedicated to those who are involved in scholarly publications.

Dear readers! Hope you must be familiar with the name “Bruce Lee”: a Hong Kong-American martial artist who once said,

“A wise man can learn more from a foolish question than a fool can learn from a wise answer.”

These fools are intellectual pygmies who, when occupying any authority position, prove themself a disaster because they are short-sighted, egoistic, self-centered, ignorant and myopic which means they are narrow-minded, intolerant, parochial and biased.

When myopic people hold positions of leadership, they don’t become leaders instead, they becomes authoritarian rather than authoritative.  Let me give you an example.

The crux of the matter is that “while myopia is a visual condition, its metaphorical application signifies its importance for foresight, strategic thinking, and supportive environment for the effective leadership because tussle between myopic view, long-term planning and decision-making can lead to negative consequences for their organization or the country”.

Dear readers! look at the above para and the preceding words. Can you call it a footnote? No, certainly not because foot notes are placed at the bottom of the page beneath the line as a piece of text or reference. The paras like the one mentioned above usually appeared in between the long text articles or books and at the end of a particular subject and not the page.

Now what would you say when management of a particular journal or a book call it a foot note?

The example refers to an article written on the request of the journal’s management without any specific instructions issued to the author (except “follow Chicago manual style references and Time New Romans font number 12”) without even looking at the pattern of the articles in their own journal (for which the article was invited) where the references are cited by numbers in the text and the detailed references related with all the numbers on one page are given at the end of the same very page in which they are mentioned.

Now examine a situation where 8 or more numbers are given on one page which mean detail references are to be mentioned at the end of the same page for which adequate space has to be left beneath the text to paste the 8 references. If “insert foot note” command is given, only one and half inch space will be given at the end of page beneath the line where instructions are given (type here) and not (insert here) and if 8 references are pasted there, they will be extended to the next page (obviously) which is not required according the numbered style of references.

Now tell me what you would think about the people who reject the paper just because the “the foot note” (references) are not inserted (they were actually pasted manually because “insert foot note” is not allowed)? Certainly, these are not myopic people but belongs to superlative degree of myopia as they are “trying to solve their problems with the same thinking they used to create them”. What do you think ?

The story doesn’t end here dear readers because there is more for your entertainment.

Look at the scenario when the management of the journal, review an invited article, change the title, the content, the phrases without changing the accompanying reference number, put their own phrase against that reference number (totally irrelevant), insert many subheading and after messing up the entire context of the article, sent it back to the author as “proof” to be approved. Wow! What do you expect from the author?

Certainly, the author will not approve the changes and will decline the consent to published the paper thinking that it is not the right of the management but of the author to amend the article. This may hurt the ego of the management (after all, they are egoistic and intolerant).

Instead of feeling ashamed of their action, the management forced the author to modify the article in the light of reviewer’s comments and re-submit it upon which, the management rejected the paper to satisfy their ego (how dare the author disapprove the suggested changes and decline the consent, it is our right to reject the article). What would you call such people?

Certainly, the intellectual pygmies. This is just one example, and I have hundreds more to describe which are even worst.

Just look around and watch for the identical phenomenon which could be a big surprise for you.

Dear readers!  it is not a question of accepting or rejecting an article (which is a routine matter ) rather, it actually symbolizes the way the country and her organizations are run, as the fools sitting there at the helm of affairs are myopic besides being narrow-minded, intolerant, parochial and biased. No wonder, why our beloved country is deteriorating instead of progressing. May God Al mighty bless us but,  Almighty bless only the nations who blessed themselves. Do we deserve the God Almighty’s blessings? Ask yourself.

See you next week, take care, bye.
