Is the climate out of balance?

Hi Readers!

Andrea Thompson: a senior desk editor for life sciences, authored an article in scientific American on March 23rd. 2026 on climate imbalance quoting the speech of UN Secretary General delivered in the concluding session of the world Meteorological Organization’s annual climate checkup. Pl. Follow the link below to listen the speech.

The crux of the speech is that the world climate is unprecedently out of balance as the past 11 years have been the hottest on record altering the balance between incoming and outgoing heat (infrared radiations) to the extant that the earth has been pushed beyond it limits forcing every climate indicator to flash red. Although this indicator appeared for the first time in March 2026, the report states that the imbalance has been increasing since 1960. It is happening so because humans are creating enhanced greenhouse effect.

The greenhouse effect is a natural process in which gases in the Earth’s atmosphere, such as water vapor, carbon dioxide, and methane (greenhouse gases) trap heat from the sun, keeping the planet warm enough to sustain life. Human activities, however, are intensifying this effect, leading to global warming.

Sunlight passes through the atmosphere warms the Earth’s surface. The ground then radiates this heat back upwards as infrared radiation (heat). Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere absorb this heat and radiate it bac towards the surface, preventing it from escaping into space.

The natural greenhouse effect keeps Earth warmer than it would be otherwise. In the “enhanced/augmented” greenhouse effect, activities such as burning fossil fuels (coal, oil, and gas) for electricity manufacturing and transport along with deforestation increases the concentrations of greenhouse gases. As a result, more heat is trapped than escape into space leading to a net increase in accumulated heat which is absorbed in the oceans.

One of the most severe consequences of climate imbalance is Extreme Weather and “Deadliest” Hazards.

Floods are ranked among the first and the foremost of deadliest natural disasters. We have experienced this in the past and still remember its devastation with agony. The unpresented rains that we are currently witnessing in Pakistan clearly indicating the change in pattern of rainfall which if combine with up-comming moon soon will further intensify the floods with increased devastation especially in the arid region where it can kill hundreds and destroy infrastructure.

The potential for rapid collapse of ice sheets and the dieback of ecosystems can cause irreversible changes to the ecosystem which can collapse and can pose threats to human survival in the form of famine and disease.

Dieback is a condition in woody plants characterized by the progressive death of twigs, branches, and roots, starting at the tips and moving in ward due to underlying stresses.

The rapid loss of species can break essential ecological links which can trigger Climate Collapse that may result in extreme weather, severe droughts, unprecedented depletion of vitas resources such as fresh water and fertile soil, desertification of land in arid region which can significantly reduce crops productivity thereby inducing food in-security.

Climate change is a “risk multiplier” as it can aggravate food and water scarcity which can spark conflict (we are already experiencing it) while food scarcity can lead to malnutrition which in turn can lead to poor health especially of elderly people as well of children and newborn. It is already expected to cause 250,000 additional deaths annually between 2030 and 2050 from causes like malaria, diarrhea, and heat stress, which is the most direct threat to human health, causing fatal heat strokes. Heat-related mortality among olders has risen by 70% in the past two decades.

Another most serious impact of climate change is Mass Displacement (Climate Refugees): The convergence of sea-level rise, drought, and agricultural failure is expected to increase this displacement many folds.

Warming of earth is triggering polar ice caps, sea ice, and glaciers melt which is reducing Earth’s reflectivity. So, instead of white ice reflecting sunlight back into space, the darker ocean and land absorb more of the sun’s energy, which increases warming. Some atmospheric pollutant can temporarily reflect sunlight; however, the net impact of increased greenhouse gas concentrations is more strong and persistent cause of energy imbalance which is currently at recording breaking high level. The earth is, therefore, accumulating heat faster than ever before, with over 90% of this excess energy going into the oceans, causing warming across all depths.

The difference between incoming and of outgoing heat is so wide that it has never been observed before. The report has revealed that the imbalance has been increasing since 1960 and particularly during the past 20 years. According to the agency, there is not historical precedent for how badly the out of balance is climate now.

The impacts of climate imbalance are interconnected leading to a vicious cycle that threatens to overpower the natural self-correcting mechanisms of the Earth: our one and only living place. Till to-date, there is no other livable planet. Remember, we are the first generation to feel the effect of climate change and the last generation to do something about it. We cannot continue pollute the atmosphere, poison the ocean, and exhaust the land. There isn’t any more available. Save whatever you have.

That’s all for now dear readers.

See you again. Take care, Bye.
