China: the unequivocal ruler of the internet world

Hi readers!

Here is something new from the Tsunami of technology.

On April 24th, 2025, Lisa Monica and Dhika Priambodo (an Indonesian mathematician) shocked the world by reporting

China launches world’s first 10G internet network”.

10G is a term used by some internet provider and industry groups in the United States with reference to broadband networks with a maximum potential download rate of ten gigabits per seconds.  The term was first used by industry association formerly known as the National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA): a trade association representing the broadband and cable television industries in the United States.

The term “10G” has no connection to the numbered generations of cellular network standards such as 5G (fifth generation). Some articles discussing the term have speculated that 10G suggests to casual readers that service would be twice as fast as 5G, when in fact the 5G standard already encompasses even faster speeds of up to 20 Gbit/s.

In early 2023, Comcast (the third-largest broadcasting and cable television company worldwide by revenue (behind only China Mobile and Verizon). It is the third-largest pay-TV company, the second-largest cable TV company by subscribers, and the largest home Internet service provider in the United States)  began referring to its Xfinity (an American telecommunications  business segment and division of the Comcast Corporations used to market consumer’s cable television, internet, telephone and wireless services) is now being on a “10G network”

despite the fact that the top-speed service available in the vast majority of homes served by Comcast was only 1 Gbit/s.

In October 2023, the National Advertising Division  (NAD) of the Better Business Bureau “ruled” that it considered Comcast’s use of 10G to be false or misleading, as it constituted an express claim that Comcast was using a tenth-generation network or was promising 10 Gbit/s speeds to all customers. The NAD recommended that Comcast should either discontinue its claims or clarify 10G as “aspirational” technology. Comcast said it would appeal the decision by the self-regulatory body. However, by January 2024, Comcast said it would no longer use the “10G Network” branding in marketing.

JAKARTA: Capital of Indonesia and the home of Dhika Priambodo reported that,

“China has achieved a major technological milestone by launching the world’s first 10G broadband internet network, marking a significant step in the development of global digital infrastructure which is the result of a collaboration between Huawei and Unicom: a government-backed telecommunications provider in China”.

According to The Economic Times, the network can reach download speeds of up to 9,834 Mbps and upload speeds of 1,008 Mbps, with an extremely low inactivity of just 3 milliseconds.

According to “91mobiles”, this speed significantly surpasses countries traditionally known for having the fastest internet infrastructure, such as the United Arab Emirates and Singapore.

Based on Statista data, the average fixed broadband speed in the UAE currently stands at 313.5 Mbps, while Singapore reaches 345.3 Mbps.

This achievement is supported by the implementation of 50G Passive Optical Network (PON) technology (PON is a fiber-optic network utilizing a point-to-multipoint topology and optical splitters to deliver data from a single transmission point to multiple user endpoints) an advanced innovation of the Fiber to the X (FTTx) system.

FTTx stands for Fiber to X, where “X” represents the endpoint where fiber optic cable is terminated. It is a general term for various broadband network architectures that utilize fiber optics for at least part of the local loop.

Under optimal conditions, this technology can provide internet speeds of up to 50 Gbps for both uploads and downloads, without requiring significant infrastructure modifications.

The network’s speed allows users to download a 20GB 4K movie in less than 20 seconds, compared to 7 to 10 minutes on a 1 Gbps connection.

Additionally, the 10G network is expected to support high-tech applications, such as cloud computing, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), telemedicine, remote education, and technology-based agriculture.

This milestone represents China’s progress in dominating global digital technology development, while also posing a new challenge for other nations to accelerate their digital transformation efforts.

While 10G, which stands for 10 gigabits per second (Gbps), speeds are far in excess of what many home networks require today, they will make sure networks are prepared to handle whatever future technologies are around the corner as it is the broadband platform of the future that will deliver improved capacity and reliability, lower latency, and faster speeds.

Dear readers! that’s how our tried and trusted (all weather) friend China is moving leaving many incentives and lessons for us to learn. The choice is ours.

See you next week.

Take care, Bye
