Psychopathy: what is it and is not?

Hi readers!

“The eyes of a psychopath will deceive you, will destroy you, will take from you your innocence, your pride and eventually your soul”.

Dear readers, you must be wondering what nonsense I am talking about? Relax, it’s not me, but Dr. Samuel Loomis: a fictional character in the Halloween franchise.

Psychopathy: by definition is a personality disorder characterized by a distinct set of traits, including a lack of sympathy and regret, antisocial behavior, and a tendency towards manipulation and deceit which is often associated with Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD)

Psychopaths usually appear charming and normal, but they lack emotional connection and can be inclined towards criminal and violent behavior. Let me give you an example of a world-famous personality (Ted Bundy): a psychopath diagnosed by Hervey Cleckley: an American psychiatrist and pioneer in the field of psychopathy.

Ted Bundy ( see the image at the top)  was an American serial killer and rapist, and one of the most tarnished and disreputable criminals of the late 20th century. Bundy confessed to 28 murders but actually killed hundreds. He was ultimately convicted of three murders and was executed in 1989.

His famous quote is,

“ we the serial killers are your sons, we are your husbands, we are everywhere and there will more of your children dead tomorrow”

Bundy had a complicated childhood as he had a stressed relationship with his stepfather. His shyness made him a frequent target of bullying (harassment). Nevertheless, his intelligence and social skills enabled him to enjoy a successful college career, and he developed a series of apparently normal emotional relationships with women. Despite this apparent stability, he sexually assaulted and killed several young women in Washington, OregonColoradoUtah, and Florida between 1974 and 1978. Following a broadcasted trial, he was sentenced to death in 1979 for the murder of two college students, but he escaped. After one year, he  again was sentenced to death, for the rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl and was finally executed in Florida’s electric chair in 1989.

Despite his crimes, Bundy became a celebrity (because we galvanized crimes), particularly after escaping from custody in Colorado in 1977. During trial, his charm and intelligence drew significant public attention.

His case inspired a series of popular novels and films devoted to serial murder. It also stimulated feminist criminology: a critical perspective within criminology that examines how gender inequality and male controlled structures influence crime, victimization, and the criminal justice system. It is often argued that popular media had transformed Bundy into a romantic figure.

Anna Salter: an American psychologist and a mystery novelist once said,

“Despite the psychopath’s lack of conscience and lack of sympathy for others, he is inevitably better at fooling people than any other type of offender”.

Dear readers! look around and see someone similar around us?

Beware of such people as these are the most dangerous creatures not deserved to be called humans.

See you again when with another interesting topic

Take care, Bye.
