Spice Route Project - Shafqat Writes

The Spice Route Project

On September 11th, 2021, US President attends the G-7 summit in Cornwall England, where   U.S. President administration announced that we we will announce an infrastructure financing mechanism for low- and middle-income countries, designed to rival China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) with partners at the G-7 Summit and called it “Build Back Better World (B3W). “

BRI is the global infrastructure development strategy adopted by Beijing in 2013 to invest in nearly 70 countries and is a central element of its foreign policy.

Exactly after one year, On September 9 2023,    Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the launch of the India-Middle East-Europe mega economic corridor. The project includes India, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, the European Union, France, Italy, Germany and the US.

‘Journey of dreams’: India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor is launched | India News – The Indian Express.

That is how Progressing, forward looking and visionary nations proceed and ascend unlike those who keep descending from the day one just because their minds lack vision and foresight because they are either not familiar with it, don’t exist or are filled with filth, lust for money and women, personal interests and much more.

Imagen Pakistan: a country where

i.  literacy rate is between 40-50%,

ii. whose nearly one fourth population comprised baggers,

iii. whose so called elite are half educated, uneducated or fake degree holders,

iv. who cheat, deceit, fool and lie to their people and forced others to practice the same,

v. who tarnish the image of others and

vi. where perception matters more than reality.

Who, in this planet earth can force  such people to follow BGII or like of that projects as envisioned by US and the Chinese president?  Who will teach them ethics? Who will exchange information with such people? and how one can prosecute criminals in such societies that are full of misinformed people? and where realities are densely masked behind distorted perceptions?

Our dear country is also facing such challenges which to me are some of the biggest challenges we are facing in 21st century? We may be preparing at snail speed but are certainly not yet fully prepared to face such a challenge because we as a nation, lack plaining, vision, will and wish to do the right things while there is hardly anybody who could do the things right. Certainly, we are lagging by centuries  not by decades.

Exactly  after one year on September 9th, 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi with US President Joe Biden and Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdelaziz Al Saud during the G20 Summit in New Delhi, announced (what US president promised a year earlier ) that a connectivity corridor spanning India to Europe via West Asia would be launched soon, and will entails an ambitious project that could leverage railway tracks and shipping corridors to help physically link up a vast stretch of the Eurasian subcontinent for improving digital connectivity and catalyzing trade among countries involved including energy products such as green hydrogen.

The Spice Routes, (also known as Maritime Silk Roads), is the name given to this corridor  that stretch from the west coast of Japan, through the islands of Indonesia around India to the lands of the Middle East – and from there, across the Mediterranean to Europe thereby linking  the

East with the West.

The project comprised rail and shipping corridor which is a part of the Partnership for Global Infrastructure Investment (PGII): a collaborative effort by G7 nations to fund infrastructure in developing nations based on the trust principles of the Blue Dot Network: BDN (which is a joint project of the United States, Japan, and Australia that supports investment in high-quality infrastructure projects around the world.

BDN works to raise money from investors through certifying projects to strict quality standards hence, it is for the world that is  increasingly connected through 3Ts( technology, travel, and trade) to create economic opportunities).

The corridor will include a rail link, an electricity cable, a hydrogen pipeline and a high-speed data cable.

Why is the project being proposed?

Long anxious about China’s connectivity projects in the region under BRI, frustrated by Pakistan’s refusal to allow overland access, and a futile quest for credible connectivity through Iran into the Eurasian landmass, India has finally found a formula to connect to both Saudi Arabia and Europa.

The idea came up when Indian National Security Adviser met his US counterpart  in May 2023.The idea acquired traction lot faster than anticipated, The presence of European Union, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and the United State in New Delhi for the G20 summit, provided opportunity to unveil the formal framework for pursuing this transformative project.

Principal deputy national security adviser of the US president gave three major reasons for developing the corridor.

First, it would increase prosperity among the countries involved through an increased flow of energy and digital communications,

Second, the project would help deal with the lack of infrastructure needed for growth in lower- and middle-income nations,

and third, it could help “turn the temperature down” on “turbulence and insecurity” coming out of the Middle East.

Anil Sassi of Indian express however,  explained on September 11th, 2023 in, Data to oil, gas to goods: What is actually the announced sea-rail corridor from India to Europe?

He said, “we see this as having a high appeal to the countries involved, and also globally,

because it is transparent,

because it is of high standard, and

because it is not coercive (which means it is neither forced upon the people of the countries involved, nor it is intimidating and/or not through harassment (please enjoy the delight and fun hidden in this sentence as it is rarely available).

Do you know dear readers that,

“There are two ingredients to deceit: a good bit of truth and a few little lies”.

No, No, No, It’s not me but  Billy Graham: an American evangelist and the most influential Christian leaders of 1940s is saying this .

Dear readers!

PGII is considered to be the bloc’s counter to China’s Belt and Road Initiative aiming to enable greater trade among the involved countries, including energy products. “The corridor is a paradigm shift, in strategic connectivity to Europe”.

This is what ”Michaël Ta chum: a  professor of international relations and political economy of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), wrote: in: South Asia Scan, Issue No. 14, Institute of South Asian Studies, National University of Singapore (Singapore).

i. For India:

this  new connectivity is of enormous geopolitical consequence  of the 2020 diplomatic normalization between the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Israel, resulting in creation of a UAE-Israel railway network via Saudi Arabia and Jordan that will ultimately connect with Israel’s Haifa port as its Mediterranean terminal,

ii. The corridor will form an alternative trans-regional commercial transportation route to the troubled Chabahar-based International North-South Transit Corrido hence, instead of Chabahar, UAE: India’s third-largest trading partner would serve as the Indian Ocean connectivity node.

iii. From Mumbai, Indian goods shipped via this route and could arrive on the European mainland in as little as 10 days’: 40 per cent faster than the time spent via the Suez Canal maritime rout.

Whether or not? India becomes a global leader in forging this commercial architecture depends on New Delhi’s ability to develop manufacturing value chains in the India-to-Europe Arab-Med Corridor and more on her cordial relations with her neighboring countries which means her ability to integrate into the corridor fundamentally hinges on how India manages its set of foreign partnerships nevertheless, it can easily understood how the corridor presents New Delhi with unique opportunities that are highly conducive for value chain integration because of the existing synergies between India’s commercial ventures with her Arab partners and with Israel,

The current centerpiece of corridor is the manufacturing value chain in food production and processing (this precisely is the area which I emphasized in the article “Relation with Israel, should we or should we……. (at the first link).

The multibillion-dollar ‘India-Middle East food corridor project is being driven by the UAE and Saudi Arabia’s investment partnerships with India that rely on the transformation of India’s agriculture and water management sectors being implemented through India’s partnership with Israel (The second area that I mentioned realizing that time don’t wait for anything and anybody. It make its own way that is made on September 9th, 2023, via New Delhi while we are still thinking weather to nod UAE and Saudi Arabia to go ahead with their multibillion-dollar investment?

UAE and Saudi Arabia are also working with the Indian government to develop an integrated hydrocarbon value chain through multibillion-dollar investments in higher value-added petrochemicals manufacturing in the country with innovative technologies, related to the generation, storage and use of energy produced from renewable sources, are the most promising sectors.

  1. (I can only wish if we could get such help directly or indirectly from the countries involved in the corridor but that need sincerity, commitment, vision, foresight and prosperity of the people in the minds of those who matter and not to nurture the personal interests. Unfortunately, we have been and are still giving a very loud and clear message to the investors that we are not sincere with ourselves stupid, how dare you think that we will be with you?  and the equally loud and clear answer is India-to-Europe Arab-Med Corridor.

US President’ administration said on June 11, 2021at G-7 summit in Cornwall, England , that “we will announce an infrastructure financing mechanism (“Build Back Better World B3W),”  for low- and middle-income countries, designed to rival China’s Belt and Road Initiative”.

He also said, “we will not fight with China rather we will compete”.

Like a thorough gentleman, The president fulfilled his promise thinking that they will beat BRI by offering a higher-quality choice with self-confidence about our model that reflects our shared values ,” a second senior administration official said.

With US president  fulfilling his promise Chinese Confucius philosophy (that believes in ancestor worship and human-centered virtues for living a peaceful life with the golden rule that is “Do not do unto others what you would not want others to do unto you.” has to deal with Chanakya philosophy:  who were considered as shrewd politician or a cunning person, a Machiavelli whose philosophy emphasizes the importance of persistence and dedication in one’s work. According to Chanakya, once you begin a task, it is crucial to not fear failure or give up easily

Let’s wait for the results.

Why is the project being proposed?

The announcement of a multimodal transport and energy corridor between India and Europe via the Middle East today at the G20 summit marks a breakthrough in post-Partition India’s quest for deeper connectivity with the regions to the north-west of the Subcontinent.

Long anxious about China’s connectivity projects in the region under its decade-old Belt and Road Initiative, frustrated by Pakistan’s refusal to allow overland access and a futile quest for credible connectivity through Iran into the Eurasian landmass, India has finally found a formula to connect to both Arabia and Europa.

Since then, the idea has acquired much traction a lot faster than anticipated. The presence of all the key actors in New Delhi for the G20 summit, including the European Union, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States, provided the opportunity to unveil the formal framework for pursuing this transformative project.

Jon Finer: President Biden’s principal deputy national security adviser, gave three major reasons for developing the corridor.

  • First, it would increase prosperity among the countries involved through an increased flow of energy and digital communications,
  • Second, the project would help deal with the lack of infrastructure needed for growth in lower- and middle-income nations,
  • And third, it could help “turn the temperature down” on “turbulence and insecurity” coming out of the Middle East, Finer said, according to AP.

“India’s Arab-Mediterranean Corridor: A Paradigm Shift, in Strategic Connectivity to Europe”. (in: South Asia Scan, Issue No. 14, Institute of South Asian Studies, National University of Singapore (Singapore).

  2.
