The term metaverse is a combination of, “meta” and “verse” “Meta” is a prefix that means beyond or surpassing, while “verse” refers to the universe.
In science fiction, the “metaverse” is a hypothetical duplication of the Internet as a single, universal, and immersive virtual world that is facilitated by the use of enlarged reality headsets. It comprises several 3D worlds where digital versions of people (AVTARS) can interact and move from one place to another.
Meta is the new name for Facebook’s parent company, announced in October 2021. This rebranding of Facebook reflects the company’s shift from and beyond social media towards building a metaverse.
Mark Zuckerberg: the Founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Meta, which he originally founded as Facebook in 2004, is responsible for setting the overall direction and product strategy for the company.
The focus will be to bring the metaverse to life and help people connect, find communities and grow businesses.
The metaverse will appear like a hybrid of today’s online social experiences, expanded into three dimensions or projected into the physical world.
Metaverse enables users to build interactive experiences that combine the virtual environment and the real world. Also, it can be considered a virtual version of the concept of cyberspace that describe widespread interconnected digital technologies dating from the first decade of the transmission of the internet. It refers to the online world as a world ‘apart from everyday reality.
Unlike the previous repetitions of the internet, the metaverse will be built and owned primarily by its users and their user-generated content (UGC): The importance for which can be observed in early metaverse projects like Roblox.02-Jun.
Metaverse was invented in 1992, by an American sci-fi writer who coin the term metaverse in his book “Snow Crash”, which portray an imagined state or society with great suffering and injustice and where rich people escape into an alternative 3D, connected reality.
The metaverse is located on the latest version of the internet called Web3 and can be accessed online using a browser or virtual reality (VR) headset.
Doctors can use the metaverse and virtual Reality (VR) in healthcare by creating 3D clinical applications. They can use this technology to make a patient’s experience more interactive. They can also monitor a patient’s vital signs in a virtual environment.
On February 10th, 2022, Metaverse for the first time was served as a virtual venue for the Indian wedding reception of Naganandini Ramaswamy and Dinesh Kshatriya, thus making the event a first-of-its-kind in the metaverse.
By 2030, people could be spending more time in the metaverse than in the real world. They will be applying for jobs, earning a living, meeting with friends, shopping, and even getting married using the virtual capabilities of the metaverse.
In Sandbox: an isolated testing environment that enables users to run programs or open files without affecting the application, system or platform on which they run,
Software developers can use It to test new programming code., and cybersecurity professionals use it to test potentially malicious software.
Metaverse crypto is a sub-set of cryptocurrencies that enable users of blockchain-powered virtual worlds to buy and sell digital assets, such as virtual land, real estate, or avatar items.
Ape Coin (APE) is one of the biggest metaverse coins on the market while Adidas, Atari, Ubisoft, Biance, Warner Music and Gucci are some of the multinationals buying land and building experiences to sell and promote their products and services on metaverse which is not only making but also losing money. In January 2023, South Korea took its metaverse strategy to the next level, by introducing a new platform built for public service relationships. The Mayor of Seoul unveiled a new virtual version of Seoul in the metaverse, which allows users to access various resources and public services in a virtual reality landscape.
Though the concept of the metaverse (a shared virtual space that is created by the convergence of multiple virtual worlds and technologies comprising augmented reality, virtual reality, and the Internet which collectively allow users to create and customize their own avatars, virtual representations of themselves, and interact with others in a variety of virtual environments, ranging from social spaces and gaming worlds to educational and business environments.
The metaverse technology is still in its infancy nevertheless, it is believed that it has the potential to revolutionize the way people interact and communicate ( a vital component for human survival) with each other. Latest research has shown that people with strong social connections have lower anxiety and depression and are more likely to possess a sense of purpose and meaning in life,
are also more likely to have better physical health,
possesses stronger immune system and lower risk of developing certain health conditions which is equally important for the health and stability of society as a whole where economic activity, with the development of virtual real estate and the possibility of buying and selling virtual goods and services will be abundantly available.
Metaverse will: allow real-time communication and interaction, which can help facilitate a sense of presence and connection with others especially for people who are geographically distant from each other or who are unable to meet in person due to circumstances such as disability or social distancing measures,
will provide a platform for shared experiences which can help foster a sense of connection and community. For example,
users can participate in activities such as games, events, or virtual reality experiences together with creating a sense of shared purpose and connection, and
it could also allow for more efficient and immersive communication, such as the ability to collaborate on projects in real-time or hold virtual meetings that feel like in-person interactions.
Metaverse is therefore, a new paradigm in the way we interact with the digital world, offering a sense of presence and immersion that is not possible in traditional online spaces. The proliferation of digital technologies has made it slightly easier to connect with others online. However, even though online connections can be valuable, they can never fully replace the richness and depth of face-to-face human connection. Metaverse is thus, well on its way to bridge the gap between the warmth of humans and the convenience of digital connections.
Looking out five years down the lines, one can imagine a place where one can have entire user-generated ecosystems, with the metaverse giving rise to virtual societies that transact and engage in a dispersed manner. Up to July 2023, Approximately 400 million People used metaverse and over 400 million monthly active users are lodging on it: 51% of whom are 13 years old or below.
Metaverse is not private because most systems allow users to create avatars without providing their personal information and their avatars’ profile data. That doesn’t mean that users are anonymous. Metaverse platform owners know which account and user created the avatar, so the avatar is not anonymous to them.
Mesa verse is the opposite to metaverse which means entering a reflection or simulacrum (something that replaces reality with its representation as exemplified by a line drawing that closely resembles the facial features of a real person while the subject of the sketch cannot be easily identified by a random observer rather it can be taken for a resemblance of any individual or reality, i.e., one enters a deeper reality (which is neither physical nor mental, but is one alone without a second).
Tim Cook: the CEO of Apple, says,
“we believes augmented reality is going to change the way we use technology for ever. We are already seeing things that will transform the way you work, play, connect and learn”.
What do you feel dear readers, about the metaverse and about what Tim Cook said? How correct is he? Think about that and I will see you next week. Take care, Bye.
